No doubt about it, we love our pets and just as we serve our family healthy and nutritious meals, so too it should be for our four-legged companions. They deserve to dine on yummy food too, but how do we know what’s best? Well, I’ve got some expert advice from my friends. Last time they gave me some great tips for my dog, and today I find this to be a significant segment because I’m writing about labels and just like I read labels for my children, really important to do the same with my pet. It’s imperative to read labels, I have two dogs, and a cat and one of the things that are really important to me when I am choosing a food is to read a label, to look for quality ingredients.
Here’s what happens to me. I’ll go to the store, I’ll look for you know, what I think is good canned food for my dog. I’m looking at the ingredients, and I just see so many things, it’s just so much to read. What am I looking for? Well, you should be looking for a food that has a named meat meal or named meat as the first ingredient because ingredients are listed according to weight. The thing that is predominantly in the food is going to be listed first, so something using a chicken meal or chicken meat as an example. Something else that is important is location, finding a place that’s really good and that you can trust.
Basically, your smaller, independent pet specialty stores, such as holistic pet cuisine, they’re a good bet for choosing food. They have the knowledge to sell the products, they learn from the individual manufacturers about the ingredients and about sourcing. Therefore, they can really help you answer questions that you might have about your pet.
Speaking of questions, there’s always that question about quality and quantity, let’s deal with the first one – quantity. We know that children are getting more obese than ever, adults are getting more overweight than ever and our pets, I think we are feeding them a little bit too much. Would you agree? Yes, we do. We do have a tenancy to overfeed our pets. It makes us feel good to fill the bowl up. So it’s good to follow the guidelines that are on the back to ensure that your pet isn’t going to be overweight, an overweight pet means a decreased life span.
Let me give an example of some guidelines. Let me grab me that cup of food in front of me. This is our go-to daily defense chicken food. For a 70-pound dog, you would be feeding about two cups of this food. If you compare that to your typical inexpensive grocery store brand food, you would be feeding about three and a half cups of this food. And you know, there also is a difference, and I’m the first one to say it. When it comes to quality, you’ve really got to buy something that’s quality and good for your pooch, agreed? These are using quality ingredients and easily digestible. You require less feeding for the animal, which also means less poop in the yard.
That was it, I really hope this was helpful!
